Crain Reaches Double Figures Scoring for 16th Time in Season at Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. — Abigail Crain reached double figures scoring for the 16th time this season for the No. 21 Belmont Abbey women's basketball team but it was Chowan who came away with the 55-36 victory Saturday afternoon at the Hawks Athletic Center.
 
The Crusaders saw their 14-game winning streak come to an end while being held to a season-low scoring total.
 
Crain finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while recording a pair of steals in the contest. She moved up to 11th in program history in scoring with 1,316 career points, passing both Valorie Bennett and Tamara Chilshom.
 
Cate Schieber and Valeria Batista each had six points for the Abbey.
 
Belmont Abbey is now 16-3 overall and 10-1 in Conference Carolinas play after its first league loss of the season. Chowan is now 11-2 overall, 8-2 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Batista accounted for the first two field goals made in the contest for the Crusaders.
  • Chowan closed the quarter on a 9-3 run.
  • After Belmont Abbey fell behind by 10 early in the second quarter, the Crusaders got back within four thanks to a 6-0 run.
  • The Hawks answered with an 11-3 run to take a 12-point lead into halftime. It was the first time this year the Crusaders have trailed by double digits.
  • Belmont Abbey attempted to rally and got back within seven thanks to a 7-3 burst to begin the third quarter.
  • Chowan answered with another run to take a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on from there.
  • Riley James finished with three assists to lead the team.
  • Belmont Abbey was held to just 29.2 percent from the field in the contest.
 
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey heads on the road to face Erskine at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Due West, S.C.
  • The contest will begin a stretch of four of the next five games on the road for the Abbey.
