No. 21/25 Crusaders Defeat Lees-McRae, Extend Win Streak to 11

BELMONT, N.C. — Madison Lusk finished with a career-best scoring and two others reached double figures as No. 21/25 Belmont Abbey defeated Lees-McRae 58-44 Tuesday evening at the Wheeler Center.

Lusk made five 3-pointers off the bench for 15 points to go with two rebounds, two steals and an assist as the Crusaders extended their winning streak to 11 games. Abigail Crain also finished with a game-high 15 points scoring and seven rebounds while Peyton Nation had 10 points and seven rebounds to her credit.

Earlier in the day, Belmont Abbey was ranked in both the WBCA and D2CSC National Rankings at T-21st and 25th, respectively.

With Tuesday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 13-2 overall and 7-0 in Conference Carolinas play and 3-0 in the Northwest Division. Lees-McRae is now 5-8 overall, 3-6 in the conference and 0-4 in divisional play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey opened the game on an 8-2 run and led 16-9 after the first 10 minutes.
  • Crain accounted for 11 of her 15 points in the first half as the Crusaders took a 36-16 lead in the half and shot 50 percent in the second quarter.
  • Lusk made all three of her 3-pointers in the third quarter as Belmont Abbey led by as many as 33 points late in the third quarter.
  • Janiah Shular nearly became the fourth Crusader in double figures scoring, finishing with nine points and six rebounds.
  • Riley James finished with a game-high seven assists and seven rebounds to go with five points.
  • Shular, Lusk and Leigha Dennison each finished with two steals for the Crusaders. Dennison made her second start of the season in Tuesday's contest.
  • The Crusaders finished with a season-best 36 points off the bench in the win.
  • Belmont Abbey held Lees-McRae to 22 percent shooting from the field. It is the third time in four games that the Crusaders have held an opponent to under 30 percent shooting.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders head on the road for a key Conference Carolinas contest at UNC Pembroke at 2 p.m. Saturday.
  • Both teams are Top 5 in the Southeast region in the D2CSC poll.
  • It is the second meeting after the Abbey defeated the Braves 55-46 back on November 26 at the Wheeler Center.
