GASTONIA, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team saw its Conference Carolinas Tournament run come to an end Monday in the championship game against UNC Pembroke Monday at CaroMont Health Park.
After making the title game out of the loser's bracket, the Crusaders dropped a 10-0 game in seven innings to the Braves.
Belmont Abbey was held to just four hits on the day with
Connor Powell,
Todd Velotta,
Caleb Burr and
Landon Hahn all reaching base on singles for the Abbey. Burr added a stolen base to his credit.
The Crusaders finish the season with a 28-25 record. It was the first time since 2017 that the Crusaders had made it to the championship game in the conference tournament.
UNC Pembroke is 42-12 and earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the full field set to be unveiled next Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNC Pembroke got the first two runs on the board with a home run in the first inning.
- Powell led off with a single and Tucker reached base after being hit by a pitch but the Crusaders were unable to bring anyone across in the inning.
- Burr led the second inning off with a single and stole third base.
- The Braves broke the game open with a four-run third inning and added two more runs in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively.
- Belmont Abbey was able to load the bases in the fifth but the Crusaders were unable to bring runners across.
- The Crusaders finished the tournament having played six games in five days.
