CENTRAL, S.C. — Trinti Cassidy finished with a career-best eight points and 14 different Crusaders tallied goals as the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Wesleyan 27-4 Saturday afternoon at the Gilbert Track and Field Complex.
The win marked the fourth straight overall for the Crusaders, who improved to 11-5 overall and finished with a 7-1 mark in Conference Carolinas play. The win clinches a first-round bye in the Conference Tournament April 25 at Mount Olive.
Cassidy finished with five goals and three assists while
Hailey Carroll and
Abbey McCarthy led the scoring with four and three goals, respectively.
Southern Wesleyan is now 1-13 overall, 1-6 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams scored a goal within the first minute of the contest with Carroll scoring off an assist from Haley Adamo 20 seconds in.
- The Crusaders had a run of 12 straight goals to close the quarter with three goals from Cassidy, two from Hannah Hizey and the first of the season for Kathryn Monk.
- Belmont Abbey added four more goals in the second quarter to take a 17-3 lead into halftime.
- Abbey McCarthy scored the first two goals of the second half to get the offense going for the Crusaders.
- Ella Carlino made three saves on the afternoon for the Abbey.
- Belmont Abbey out-shot SWU 45-14. The 45 shots and 37 goals are both season-highs.
- The Crusaders finished with 33 ground balls, one shy of a season-best. Kami Sauceda led the team with four while Cassidy and Reilly McCarthy had three each.
- The team also forced 18 Warriors turnovers, also matching a season-best. Cassidy and Meghan Carroll each forced three turnovers.
