GREENWOOD, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team returned from its extended break as the Crusaders closed out regular season play at Lander Wednesday evening at Van Taylor Stadium.
Three Crusaders finished with hat tricks on the evening but it was Lander who came away with the 16-15 victory in overtime.
Hailey Carroll led the Abbey with six points (three goals, three assists) while
Emma Pherson and
Abbey McCarthy also scored three times.
Belmont Abbey closes the regular season with an 11-6 overall record while the Bearcats are 8-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lander scored the first two goals of the game but Belmont Abbey rallied for the final four goals of the quarter.
- That included two goals from Carroll in the final 20 seconds of the period.
- The Bearcats scored five straight goals in the second quarter but Pherson's first goal of the game got the Abbey back within 7-6 at halftime.
- Belmont Abbey retook the lead in the third quarter with a goal from Adamo.
- Pherson added two goals in 36 seconds of play as well in the quarter.
- All of McCarthy's goals came in the fourth quarter including two goals to give the Crusaders the lead again.
- Adamo added her second goal of the game with 3:09 left but the Bearcats rallied with two goals to tie the contest and extend the game.
- Lander's game-winning goal came less than three minutes into overtime.
- Summer Eddinger finished with nine saves.
- The Crusaders had a 21-13 edge in draw controls with four each from Pherson and Kacey Kubarewicz.
- Belmont Abbey finished with a season-high 20 caused turnovers led by three from Carroll, Kubarewicz and Elizabeth Hommel.
- The team had 27 ground balls led by six from Kubarewicz.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will be the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament scheduled to begin next week.
- Belmont Abbey will face the winner of No. 3 seed Young Harris and No. 6 seed Converse at 3 p.m. next Thursday at Mount Olive.
