MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey erupted for six runs in the top half of the seventh inning of game two, rallying for a victory and sweep of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader over Chowan Friday afternoon. The Crusaders took the first game 6-2 and the second 12-7.
The Abbey (13-12 overall and 5-7 in league play) entered its final at-bat trailing 7-6. The Hawks fall to 5-22, 1-11.
THE OPENER
- Casey Laing doubled and homers as part of a 3-for-4 game. She had a double to left in the first inning, then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make the score 4-0.
- Sydney Pon and Adison Yoder each had two hits, including an RBI double.
- Four other players tallied a hit as part of an 11-hit attack.
- Jenna Goldey earned the win to move to 3-1 on the season. She threw four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out three.
- Yoder pitched the final three shutout innings, allowing only a hit and a walk, for her second save of the season.Â
THE NIGHTCAP
- The Crusaders pounded out 13 hits, led by Foster Sharpe's three. She scored two runs and drove in another.
- Three other players -- Bailey Presley, Sage Farmer and Laing -- had a pair of hits each.
- Belmont Abbey scored single runs in the first and second before a two-spot in the third.
- The lead increased to 5-0 in the fourth before Chowan cut the gap to 5-2 after four.
- The Crusaders added to the lead in the fifth, but the Hawks plated four in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 7-6 lead.
- In the seventh, the first three batters singled to tie the score, then an error and hit batter pushed The Abbey back in front. After a fielder's choice out, Mackenzie Allison hit a grand slam to left field for some insurance.Â
- McKenna Meadors (2-4) earned the win, pitching the final 2.1 innings in relief. She allowed only an unearned run and two hits.
