TIGERVILLE, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned to Conference Carolinas play and opened a series at No. 3 North Greenville Friday afternoon at Ashmore Park. It was the first meeting since the Southeast Super Regional last season.
Connor Powell and
Garrett Browder each had two hits but it was North Greenville who came away with the 12-4 victory over the Abbey.
NGU jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings as Belmont Abbey attempted to rally after putting up four runs in the fifth. However, the Crusaders were unable to get any closer and saw a five-game winning streak come to an end.
Belmont Abbey is now 19-14 overall, 11-8 in Conference Carolinas play. North Greenville is 28-7 overall, 15-4 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Browder recorded the first hit of the afternoon for the Abbey on a two-out double in the first. Belmont Abbey was able to load the bases but were unable to score.
- NGU scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.
- Powell's two hits came in the second and fourth innings.
- NGU added a pair of runs in the second and four in the fourth.
- Belmont Abbey's four runs all came in the fifth inning as five straight Crusaders reached base safely.
- Carter DuHaime got the Abbey scoring started with a two-run double that was immediately followed by an RBI single from Justin Herrera.
- Powell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly following a North Greenville pitching change.
- NGU homered in the seventh and eighth inning to cap the scoring.
- Josh Collett took the loss for the Abbey.
