LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Redshirt freshman
Zach Puentes tallied 11 kills and five digs, but top-ranked and No. 2 seed Long Beach State overcame a hot start by Belmont Abbey for a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-11) victory over the seventh-seeded Crusaders.
The Abbey saw its school-record-tying seven-game winning streak snapped to end the season at 21-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jibriel Elhaddad registered six kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while adding three blocks assists.
- Joseph Morris dished out 19 assists, while chipping in two kills, three digs and two block assists.
- Ryan Charles made a team-high six digs.
- The Abbey held an advantage at the net, with 5.0 blocks to LBSU's 3.5
- Belmont Abbey came out strong, holding a 5-3 lead after eight points. The Crusaders hit .333 (11k-3e-24a) in the opening set despite The Beach scoring nine of the last 15 points for the 25-18 win.
- The Beach took control early in each of the next two sets, holding the Crusaders to percentages of .167 and -.065.
- Conversely, LBSU hit .447 for the contest, including .636 in the final set.Â
