Crusaders Close Season in Conference Tournament

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Katelyn Miller finished with a hat trick and three other Crusaders finished with two goals each as Belmont Abbey faced Young Harris in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Thursday at the Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
 
The Crusaders took an early two-goal lead but it was the Mountain Lions who pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 14-10 victory over the Abbey.
 
Belmont Abbey finishes the season with an 11-7 overall record. Young Harris is now 12-7. and has advanced to the conference championship against Mount Olive on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders got on the board with the first two goals of the game thanks to goals from Abbey McCarthy and Emma Pherson.
  • Young Harris scored the final three goals of the quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey scored the first two goals of the second quarter with goals from Haley Adamo and Katelyn Miller.
  • After the Mountain Lions retook the lead, Adamo scored her second goal of the quarter to pull the game even at halftime.
  • Both teams added three goals each in the third quarter and entered the fourth quarter tied at 8-8.
  • Miller's goal to open the fourth quarter gave the Abbey a 9-8 lead and Cassidy scored to make it 10-10 with 9:09 to go.
  • Young Harris scored the final four goals of the contest to pull away for the win.
  • Summer Eddinger finished with 14 saves on the day.
  • The Crusaders had 33 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. Cassidy had four caused turnovers and five Crusaders had three ground balls each.
