SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey exploded for 15 runs and 14 hits in the second game of the doubleheader, earning a split at Converse in Conference Carolinas softball action on Saturday. The Valkyries won the first game 6-5, while the Crusaders took the second 15-1 in five innings.
With the split, The Abbey stands 17-14 overall and 9-9 in league play, while Conference improves to 16-32, 5-13.
THE OPENER
- Hallie Mele went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs driven in. She had a two-run double in the second and a solo home run in the fourth.
- McKenna Meadors had two hits in three at-bats, including a seventh-inning home run to center field.
- Sage Farmer had the team's six hit.
- Meadors (4-6) took the loss in relief. She allowed three hits and two runs in 5.2 innings pitched. Her five strikeouts were a career-high.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Maddie Phillips went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored. She had a two-run single in the third and an RBI single in the fourth.
- Mele, Farmer, Bailey Presley and Casey Laing each had two hits. Presley drove in three and scored three, while Mele also drove in a pair.
- Belmont Abbey's 15 hits tied a season high (North Greenville on Mar. 21).
- After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Crusaders plated two in the second, seven in the third and five in the fourth. The final run came in the fifth
- Adison Yoder (7-5) earned the complete-game win. She scattered five hits, while striking out one.
