Late Rallies Lifts Abbey Softball To Sweep of UNCP

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey softball team used several big innings and timely plays as the Crusaders rallied to earn a sweep of UNC Pembroke in Conference Carolinas play Wednesday afternoon at Crusader Field.
 
The Crusaders came back from two runs down in the sixth to take the opener 9-8 before rallying from six down in the fifth to earn a 13-9 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
 
 The second game was highlighted by a 10-run inning in the fifth that erased a five-run inning from the Braves in the top half of the frame. McKenna Meadors earned two wins in relief for the Abbey while Foster Sharpe had five hits on the day as she was among the standouts offensively.
 
With Wednesday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 16-13 overall, 8-8 in Conference Carolinas play. UNC Pembroke is 16-27 overall, 7-9 in league play.
 
THE OPENER
  • The Crusaders jumped out to a fast start with a four-run first inning starting with an RBI double from Sharpe.
  • Casey Laing extended the lead with a three-run home run, her fourth of the season.
  • The second inning saw both teams hit home runs: UNCP with a two-run homer and a solo home run from Jenna Goldey.
  • After two more runs in the third from the Braves, Sydney Pon gave the Abbey a 6-4 lead with an RBI single.
  • UNC Pembroke took advantage of a Crusader error in the fifth and took the lead with a three-run home run in the sixth.
  • The Crusaders answered with RBI singles from Sharpe and Bailey Presley. Presley's hit drove in two runs to put the Abbey ahead.
  • McKenna Meadors earned her third win of the season with 3.2 innings of relief.
  • Adison Yoder pitched a scoreless seventh to earn her third save of the year.
 
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Both teams got on the board in the first inning with the Braves hitting a two-run home run and a pair of RBI singles from Sharper and a two-run single from Bailey Presley.
  • Presley had three hits in the second game of the twin bill.
  • UNC Pembroke scored one run each in the third and fourth inning and put up five in the fifth that included a grand slam.
  • Sharper got the rally started in the fifth with a lead-off single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Sydney Pon.
  • Alysa Norman and Sami Kirk came up with pinch-hit RBI singles to cut the deficit down to 9-6.
  • Hallie Mele kept the charge going with a two-run double to make it a 9-8 contest.
  • Sharpe came through with the go-ahead RBI single to plate two runs.
  • Meadors added to the lead with a two-run double followed by an RBI single from Pon for second run driven in in the inning.
  • The Crusaders sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame.
  • Meadors only allowed one base runner the final two innings to secure the win.
  • The 14 hits is the second-most in a single game this season for the Abbey.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders step out of Conference Carolinas play with a doubleheader at Tusculum on Friday starting at noon.
  • It is a makeup of games previously scheduled from February 24.
  • The Abbey continues conference play with a doubleheader at Converse beginning at noon Saturday.
