BELMONT, N.C. --
Hallie Mele had five hits in six at-bats, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort in the nightcap, helping Belmont Abbey to a split of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader against North Greenville Thursday afternoon. NGU took the first game 9-1 in five innings before the hosts captured the second game 13-7.
With the results, The Abbey stands at 11-10 overall and 3-5 in league play, while North Greenville falls to 22-12, 6-4.
THE OPENER
- Belmont Abbey tallied four hits in the contest -- doubles by Mele and Ava Elkins with singles by Foster Sharpe and Adison Yoder.
- The Crusaders fell behind 5-0 in the third inning, but rallied for a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Sharpe.
- The visitors tacked on four runs in the top of the fifth to end the game after five innings.
- Starter McKenna Meadors took the loss to fall to 1-3. She allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 4.0 innings. She also struck out four.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Belmont Abbey pounded out a season-high 15 hits, while plating its second-highest run total of the year.
- Sydney Pon, Makenzie Allison and Casey Laing joined Mele with multiple hits.
- Pon drove in four with a two-run single in the first and a two-run double in the fourth. The latter broke a 6-6 tie as part of a six-run inning.
- The Abbey had opened a 5-0 lead in the first with Allison and Elkins delivering RBIs.
- After North Greenville tied the game at five, Mele out back in front 6-5 after three.
- Jenna Goldey, who was moved up to the varsity team less than a week ago, picked up her second in win in three decisions wtih 4.1 innings of relief. She allowed just two runs on three hits and six walks, while striking out two.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey returns to action Wednesday against Lenoir-Rhyne at Crusader Field.
- The Crusaders were scheduled to face Converse tomorrow, but impending weather has pushed that to April.
