BELMONT, N.C. — Emma Pherson led the way for Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse by scoring a career-best five goals as the Crusaders defeated Young Harris 17-15 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
It is the second time that Pherson has scored five goals in a game dating back to the contest against Chowan on April 23, 2022.
She scored four of her five goals in the first half as Belmont Abbey held off a second-half rally by the Mountain Lions to secure the win. Pherson also had six draw controls on the day.
Katelyn Miller also had four goals for the Crusaders.
Summer Eddinger finished with 12 saves on the day as she finished with double figures in saves for the fifth time this season.
Belmont Abbey improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is now 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders came out aggressively early and quickly scored three goals in the first 2:15 of play.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 15 shots in the opening quarter and led 7-4 after the first 15 minutes.
- The Abbey had seven-goal leads at two different points in the second quarter and took a 13-6 advantage into halftime.
- Abbey McCarthy scored twice in the first half for the Crusaders.
- The Mountain Lions chipped away at the Abbey lead in the third quarter.
- The lone goal of the quarter for the Crusaders came on a goal by Kami Sauceda.
- Haley Adamo scored with 10:15 remaining to give the team a 15-11 lead.
- Young Harris scored twice after that but Pherson added her final goal of the day with 4:29 remaining to keep the Mountain Lions in check.
- The final goal of the contest for the Crusaders came with 2:13 remaining as Miller scored with an extra-woman advantage.
- Eddinger helped seal the game for the Crusaders by making three saves in the final 2:30 of the contest.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 10 caused turnovers including two each from Triniti Cassidy, Elizabeth Hommel, Caitlyn Marone and Miller.
- The Abbey had a 21-18 advantage in ground balls.
