Crusaders Sweep Lees-McRae for First Conference Wins

BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey jumped out to early leads in both contests, then held on twice to sweep Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader on Tuesday. The Crusaders won the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 5-4.

With the wins, The Abbey improves to 10-9 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Bobcats fall to 8-14, 3-3.

THE OPENER
  • Mackenzie Allison and Foster Sharpe each had two hits with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
  • Freshman Ava Elkins extended her hitting streak to eight games with a double and singles. She has been held hitless in only one of her nine appearances this season.
  • Bailey Presley, who walked three times, also came around to score twice.
  • Belmont Abbey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Sharpe, then answered a Bobcat tally in the second with three in the third. Allison homered to center for a 4-1 margin, then an unearned run pushed the lead to 5-1.
  • LMC struck back with two unearned runs in the fourth, prompting a pitch change to Jenna Goldey and she closed the door. She earned her first collegiate win, allowing just one hit over 3.1 innings pitched. She walked one and struck out one.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Hallie Mele and Adison Yoder each had two hits, while driving in two.
  • Trinity Wall had a hit and scored twice, while Sharpe also crossed the plate twice.
  • Sami Kirk had the last of the Crusaders' six hits.
  • Yoder and Kirk both delivered RBI singles in the second for a 2-0 lead. Yoder and Mele plated runs in the fourth to double the margin.
  • The Bobcats scored runs in the fourth and sixth to trail 4-2, but Mele homered in the seventh for an much-needed insurance run.
  • Lees-McRae rallied in its final at-bat, plating two unearned runs with two outs, but Yoder struck out the final batter for the win.
  • Yoder (5-4) scattered 10 hits in the complete-game victory. She allowed just one earned run while striking out three.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey returns home to start a six-game homestand with conference doubleheaders this weekend.
