Abbey Opens Conference Play With Victory at Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Kacey Kubarewicz tallied a career-best five goals for Belmont Abbey and was one of four Crusaders to score multiple goals as the team defeated Converse 21-13 Tuesday at Weisiger Stadium. The contest marked the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams.

The Abbey got off to a fast start by scoring the first five goals of the game, including two from Abbey McCarthy. McCarthy finished with three goals for her first career hat trick. Hailey Carroll also scored in the opening minutes and finished with a game-high four assists. She also finished with a pair of caused turnovers.

Belmont Abbey improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Converse is now 1-2 overall, 0-1 in the league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The five opening goals for the Crusaders came in the first 5:12 of play.
  • After Converse closed the first quarter with a pair of goals, Kubarewicz and McCarthy accounted for the first two goals of the second quarter.
  • The Valkyries got within two goals early in the third quarter but a four-goal burst from the Crusaders helped create some separation.
  • Triniti Cassidy accounted for two of the goals along with Grace Ridge and Scout Chaffin scoring one each.
  • Belmont Abbey scored twice in the fourth quarter playing a woman down.
  • Kubarewicz scored three goals in the fourth quarter to help Belmont Abbey put the game away.
  • Summer Eddinger finished with 10 saves for the Crusaders.
  • The Crusaders out-shot the Valkyries 36-33 for the game.
  • The Abbey also held a 22-15 advantage in draw controls with Emma Pherson leading the way with six.
  • In total, 11 different Crusaders scored a goal in the victory.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey will host Lee University at noon Saturday from Alumni Field.
  • This will be the second meeting overall between the two programs and the first trip to Belmont for the Flames.
