AIKEN, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey softball team continued its season-opening eight-game road trip to begin the 2024 season at USC Aiken Wednesday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.
The Crusaders and Pacers battled in a pair of close contests but it was USC Aiken who came away with the sweep, winning Game 1 3-0 before earning a 3-1 victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Belmont Abbey is now 3-3 on the season while USC Aiken is now 6-2
THE OPENER
- Trinity Wall had the Crusaders' only hit in the contest, an infield single in the second.
- Erin Gill pitched a complete game, scattering 10 hits. She struck out five, allowing only three runs, all earned. She took the loss to fall to 1-1.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Foster Sharpe had a double as part of The Abbey's three hits. Hallie Mele and Mackenzie Allison each singled.
- The Crusaders opened the scoring in the top of the first after Allison plated Bailey Presley on a two-out single down the left-field line.
- The Pacers answered with a two-run home run in the first and an RBI single in the sixth.
- In the top of the sixth, BAC had its best chance to tie, putting runners on first and second with one out.
- Adison Yoder (1-2) took the loss despite a complete-game effort. She allowed eight hits and a walk against three strikeouts.
UP NEXT
- The eight-game road trip concludes with a doubleheader at Augusta beginning at noon Saturday.
- The Crusaders host Concord in its home opener on February 23 at Crusader Field.
