Abbey Finishes Regular Season with Scoreless Draw at NGU

TIGERVILLE, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team wrapped up the 2024 regular season with a scoreless draw at Northwest Division rival North Greenville Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
 
The two teams were locked in a defensive battle all afternoon as they combined for just two shots on goal, both coming from the Crusaders.
 
Belmont Abbey ends the regular season on a five-match unbeaten streak and is 7-7-3 overall with a 4-6-2 mark in Conference Carolinas play. North Greenville is now 3-3-7 overall and 1-3-7 in the league with one more match to play in its season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first shot of the match for the Crusaders came from Greer Hopkins nearly 20 minutes into the match. He finished with three shots on the day to lead the team.
  • The Crusaders withstood the Trailblazers' five shots in the first 45 minutes.
  • Belmont Abbey took five shots in the second half with two of them coming on goal from Sam Jordan and Hopkins.
  • Marcos Frias and Austin Ball accounted for the other two shots for the Abbey.
  • Trent McConnaughey kept his second straight clean sheet for the Crusaders.
  • The Crusaders had three corner kicks compared to two for NGU.
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will wait and see if they qualify for the Conference Carolinas Tournament that begins next week.
  • Belmont Abbey was ranked No. 10 in the KPI rankings entering play Saturday to determine seeding. The top nine teams make the tournament.
  • Conference Carolinas play concludes on Monday with the brackets slated to be unveiled later in the evening.
