Crusaders Upset No. 17/20 Georgia Southwestern For Second Straight Win

ANDERSON, S.C.— Three Belmont Abbey women's basketball players finished in double figures scoring and the Crusaders used a big third quarter to pull away for a 72-59 victory over nationally-ranked Georgia Southwestern Friday in the opening day of the AU Classic at the Abney Athletic Center.
 
The Hurricanes entered the week ranked No. 17 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Coaches Poll and No. 20 in the D2CSC National Poll.
 
Riley James finished with a game-high 23 points to go with seven assists and five rebounds. Abigail Crain added 20 points and seven rebounds while Peyton Nation had 19 points to go with six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • James scored seven of Belmont Abbey's first 13 points of the game as the Crusaders opened with a 13-4 run.
  • Crain, James and Nation accounted for 18 of Belmont Abbey's 21 points in the first quarter.
  • Lillian Bates earned her first collegiate basket in the second quarter.
  • The Hurricanes outscored the Crusaders 17-8 in the second quarter to take a 30-29 lead at halftime.
  • Belmont Abbey went on a 7-0 run to begin the second half.
  • After Georgia Southwestern got within four at 38-34, Belmont Abbey closed the quarter on a 14-5 run highlighted by 3-pointers from Nation and Cate Schieber.
  • The Hurricanes got within seven points with under four minutes left but Crain and Nation helped the Abbey get the lead back to double figures for the remainder of the contest.
  • Belmont Abbey outrebounded Georgia Southwestern 36-26 in the game.
  • Both teams had six steals with Schieber recording two and four others with one.
