BELMONT, N.C. — After a scoreless first half, the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team broke through with three second-half goals as the No. 4 seed Crusaders defeated the No. 5 seed Converse Valkyries 3-0 Sunday in the Conference Carolinas Tournament quarterfinals Sunday at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders (12-3-3) advance to face No. 1 seed Lees-McRae at 11 a.m. Friday in the semifinals at Bryan Park in Browns Summit, N.C. It is the fourth straight season that Belmont Abbey has advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Converse finishes the season with a 9-7-3 record.
The Abbey outshot the Valkyries 23-4 in the contest but it wasn't until
Gabriela Enciso's goal in the 55th minute that broke the deadlock. Anna Richard and
Sabrina Cunha also scored goals in the final 10 minutes of the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey came out on the attack in the first half with eight shots in the first 45 minutes.
- The Crusaders also held the Valkyries without a shot in the first half.
- Enciso broke the stalemate with an assist from Haley Long in the 55th minute. It was the second goal in as many games for Enciso while Long recorded an assist for the third straight match.
- Belmont Abbey withstood a Converse free kick and deflection to maintain the shutout.
- The second goal of the day for the Crusaders came from Richard's team-leading 10th goal in the 81st minute off an Enciso assist.
- Belmont Abbey capped off the scoring with Cunha's fifth goal off a header. Mia Muckenthaler was credited with her third assist of the season.
- Converse took four shots in the final five minutes of the match but Ryleigh Dougherty made two saves to help preserve the shutout.
- Brianna Sroka made the start for the Crusaders as the two goalkeepers combined for a second straight shutout.
- Belmont Abbey had nine corner kicks compared to two for the Valkyries.
