Nation’s Career-Best Effort Lifts Crusaders Past King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Peyton Nation finished with one of the best nights of her Belmont Abbey career as the Crusaders defeated King 64-47 in a Conference Carolinas contest Wednesday evening at the Student Complex Center.
 
Nation earned her second career double-double with a season-best 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the contest. The 19 points is one shy of her career-high 20 that was set back on November 20, 2021 against North Greenville.
 
Abigail Crain was one rebound shy of a double-double as well with 14 points and nine rebounds on the evening. Catherine Hendershott and Riley James also finished in double figures with 10 points each. James led the team with four assists.
 
Belmont Abbey extended its winning streak to three games and improves to 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas play. King is 1-13 overall, 0-4 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey got off to a good start thanks to an 11-3 run to begin the contest. The Crusaders made their first five field goals during that stretch.
  • Nation had 10 of The Abbey's 16 points in the second quarter.
  • The Crusaders' largest lead came late in the third quarter as the team led by 22 points thanks in part to converting 9 of 12 from the free throw line.
  • Hendershott accounted for Belmont Abbey's first five points of the fourth quarter to close the game out.
  • Cate Schieber led the team with four steals and two blocked shots on the night.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with a season-high 47 rebounds against the Tornado.
  • The team also had four blocked shots in the contest.
  • 32 of Belmont Abbey's 64 points were from inside the paint.
  • The Crusaders won a game they did not trail for the third time this season.
  • Belmont Abbey held King to just 26.2 percent shooting from the field. It is the second straight game that the Crusaders have held an opponent to under 30 percent from the field.

  • The Crusaders return home for their next three contests starting with a meeting against Emmanuel at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeler Center.
