BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team withstood a late rally from UNC Pembroke in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 37-36 victory in a Conference Carolinas contest Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center. It was the first meeting since the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship game last season.
After a missed three-pointer from the Crusaders in the final minute, the Braves had three shots to win the game in the final six seconds of the contest but Belmont Abbey was able to hold on and secure its sixth straight win.
Riley James finished with a season-high 15 points to go with four assists and three steals. 13 of the 15 points came after halftime and she scored the first nine points of the second half for The Abbey.
Saturday's game equaled the fewest points scored in a single game since March 5, 2013, a 56-37 loss to Barton in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. It is also the second straight game that the Crusaders have held an opponent to 36 points.
Abigail Crain finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Belmont Abbey improved to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in Conference Carolinas. UNC Pembroke is 10-5 overall with an identical 5-1 record in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were locked in a close battle early as UNC Pembroke scored the first six points of the game.
- Belmont Abbey's first points came at the 3:17 mark of the first quarter on a made layup by Abigail Crain.
- Cate Schieber's three-pointer with 7:19 left in the first half gave The Abbey a 10-8 lead. It would be the only lead change in the contest.
- The 13 points scored by UNC Pembroke is the fewest points allowed in the first half by the Crusaders this season.
- James' nine-point surge coming out of halftime can in just 2:27 of game play. The Abbey's largest lead was nine during that stretch.
- The Crusaders' final basket came on a made James jump shot with 2:10 remaining in the game.
- Belmont Abbey out-rebounded UNC Pembroke 43-34.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 10 turnovers, it's second fewest since it had nine in the season opener against Mars Hill.
- Belmont Abbey won despite shooting a season-low 27.6 percent from the field.
