GASTONIA, N.C. – Alex Sniffen made the longest start of his career and the Belmont Abbey offense finished with 12 hits as the No. 5 seed Crusaders baseball team opened the 2023 Conference Carolinas Tournament with a 10-3 victory over No. 8 seed Emmanuel in the play-in round Wednesday afternoon.
Belmont Abbey took an early lead in the first two innings and held the Lions to a season-low three hits.
Connor Powell finished with a three-hit day for The Abbey while
Patrick Taylor and
Ben Ferguson had two hits each.
It was the fourth time this year that the Crusaders had defeated the Lions after completing a three-game sweep April 21-22.
Belmont Abbey improves to 37-14 overall and Emmanuel closes the season at 25-24.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got on the board in the first inning when Connor Powell scored on a fielder's choice.
- After Emmanuel plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, the Crusaders regained the lead with four runs of their own.
- Patrick Taylor gave The Abbey the lead with a two-run single as part of a run of five straight batters to reach safely.
- Connor Tucker added a two-run single to extend the Crusader lead to 5-2.
- The Lions cut the deficit down to 5-3 in the sixth with a home run before Belmont Abbey answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
- The runs came via a sacrifice fly by Connor Powell and the 11th home run of the season by Ben Ferguson.
- Belmont Abbey capped the scoring in the seventh with Powell drawing a bases-loaded walk while Joey Humphrey scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Emmanuel.
- Myles Hedgecock came in and recorded the final four outs in relief for the Crusaders.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
- Belmont Abbey was ranked No. 3 in the latest Southeast Region rankings in the NCAA.
- The Crusaders are one of four Conference Carolinas schools ranked in the Top 9 with North Greenville No. 1, UNC Pembroke No. 5 and Mount Olive No. 6.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will face No. 2 seed Barton at 3 p.m. Thursday in the second game of a tripleheader scheduled.
- Thursday's games mark the beginning of the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
