TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team saw its successful season come to a close Friday night at the Southeast Super Regional against top-seeded North Greenville Friday night at Ashmore Park.
In the battle of the Crusaders, Belmont Abbey fell in Game 1 by a score of 16-8 before The Abbey dropped a heartbreaker 10-6 in Game 2.
The two games turned into slugfests as both teams combined to hit 14 home runs over the span of two games.
Belmont Abbey closed the season with a 41-18 overall record, the most wins in a single season under head coach
Chris Anderson. It is also the most wins since the 2018 season when the Crusaders finished 40-14.
North Greenville moves to 49-9 and advances to the College World Series set to begin next weekend in Cary, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- NGU jumped out to an early lead by scoring on a Belmont Abbey error and later an RBI double in the first inning.
- North Greenville extended the lead to 10-0 after four innings with four home runs in a three-inning span.
- Belmont Abbey broke through in the fifth with a four-spot in the inning thanks to an RBI double from Connor Powell and a three-run home run from Ben Fergusson.
- Powell added a second RBI with an single in the sixth. He led the team with three hits in the opening game.
- Connor Tucker capped the scoring for the Crusaders with a three-run home run in the seventh inning.
- The two teams combined for nine home runs in the contest.
- Garrett Browder was hit by a pitch twice, extending the Crusaders' national lead to 153 times hit by a pitch this year.
- Reece Fields took the win for NGU while Alex Sniffen took the loss.
GAME 2
- The offensive surge continued in the first inning of Game 2 when the two teams combined for seven runs in the first inning.
- North Greenville, the designated visiting team, took a 3-0 lead before Belmont Abbey captured the lead with four runs.
- The inning started with an RBI single by Garrett Browder before a three-run home run by Carter DuHaime gave the Crusaders the lead.
- Jack Boyles hit his second home run of the season in the second inning to extend the Abbey lead to 5-3.
- A three-run home run in the fourth inning gave NGU the lead before an RBI single in the fifth by Connor Tucker tied the game at 6.
- In his final appearance for Belmont Abbey, Grant Lohmeier pitched 7.2 innings and struck out five on 126 pitches.
- A pair of two-run home runs in the ninth inning for North Greenville proved to be the deciding factor.
- Patrick Taylor singled and a run scored on a throwing error in the ninth.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 12 hits, including three from Connor Powell and two each from Ben Ferguson and Browder.
