Abbey Baseball Returns Home, Earns 9-8 Victory over Catawba

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team closed out its slate of games before the Easter break on a good note thanks to a 9-8 victory over Catawba Wednesday evening at Abbey Yard.
 
The Crusaders extended its winning streak to four games with timely hitting and being able to rally from an early three-run deficit.
 
Connor Tucker led Belmont Abbey with three hits while Caleb Burr and Connor Powell both homered in the win. Nic Aehlert earned the win while Drew Stegura earned his second save in as many days.
 
Belmont Abbey improved to 26-11 on the season and completed the season sweep over the Indians. Catawba is now 23-15 on the year.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Catawba jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Tucker got The Abbey on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Powell got the Crusaders within one with his solo home run in the third.
  • Belmont Abbey took its first lead in the fourth at 5-4 thanks to an RBI single from Carter DuHaime and an RBI groundout by Whitaker.
  • Catawba recaptured the lead in the fifth before the Crusaders took the lead for good with another RBI single from Tucker and a three-run home run by Burr to make it 8-5.
  • Both teams scored runs in the sixth as Belmont Abbey capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Todd Velotta.
  • Nic Aehlert pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed a run and a hit to earn the win.
  • Stegura only allowed one hit in two scoreless innings and struck out his final batter faced to earn the save.
  • Ben Ferguson and Burr also finished with two hits in the win.
  • The Crusaders are now 16-0 against nonconference opponents this season, including a 12-0 mark against teams from the South Atlantic Conference.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders are off this weekend for Easter break.
  • The team returns to action with a midweek series against USC Aiken. The series begins April 11 at 4 p.m. at Abbey Yard with a return trip to South Carolina at 5 p.m. April 12.
  • Belmont Abbey returns to Conference Carolinas play with a three-game series against No. 1 North Greenville April 14-15 at Abbey Yard.
