McCulley, Wyatt Score Twice Each in Semifinal Encounter

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Davis McCulley and Matthew Wyatt scored two goals each, but a decisive second quarter lifted No. 4 seed Barton to a 10-7 upset of top-seeded Belmont Abbey Thursday in the semifinal round of the Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse championship.

The result snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Crusaders (10-4). The Bulldogs (10-4) avenged an overtime loss in the regular season meeting to advance to the championship game on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both McCulley and Wyatt added an assist for three points. Jacob Power also tallied three points on a goal and two assists.
  • Tre Childers and Riley Arsenault tallied the other two goals.
  • Thomas Sullivan made 12 saves in goal.
  • Barton outshot Belmont Abbey 43-27 overall and 22-17 on goal. Each team had 20 ground balls, while Caleb Mulcahy won 13 of 19 faceoffs.
  • A 4-1 Barton advantage in the second quarter gave Barton just what it needed. Each team scored twice in the first, once in the third and three times in the fourth quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey's two goals in the opening period led gave it 1-0 and 2-1 leads.
  • The Abbey took a 3-2 lead on Jacob Power's 10th goal of the season in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter
  • But Barton tallied four unanswered before intermission. With the second tied at 3, the Bulldogs found the net three times in a span of 1:39 for a 6-3 lead with 1:22 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Crusaders tried to rally in the fourth, cutting the margin to 8-6 with 10:34 to play and 9-7 with 8:59 left, but Barton clinched the win with a man-up goal at the 3:36 mark.

  • Belmont Abbey closes out the season with a final regular-season contest.
