Hallie Mele went 4-for-6 during the doubleheader with four runs scored and four driven in and
Adison Yoder picked up wins as a starter and reliever, as Belmont Abbey swept Chowan 5-1 and 8-4 in Conference Carolinas softball action Friday afternoon. The Crusaders improve to 18-22 overall and 12-10 in league play, while the Hawks fall to 16-27, 3-19.
THE OPENER
- Mackenzie Sprinkle was 2-for-2 with a home run and double while six other players recorded hits.
- Mackenzie Allison had a hit and sacrifice fly to drive in a run, while Sydney Pon had a hit and scored twice.
- Mele singled and scored a run.
- Yoder improved to 13-7 with the complete-game victory. She scattered six hits and two walks while not allowing an earned run. Yoder also fanned a career-high five.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Belmont Abbey rallied from a 4-1 deficit with two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth for the victory.
- Mele homered in the third for the first run, singled in the fifth and delivered a two-out, bases-loaded blooper that turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 lead.
- Two batters later, Pon homered to right center for two insurance runs. The senior finished the contest 2-for-4.
- Yoder came in for the top of the six and faced just six batters. She gave up a hit in both frames but the outfield turned fly-out double plays in both innings. She improved to 14-7 on the season
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey wraps up the regular-season tomorrow afternoon against Barton at Crusader Field.
- The teams as scheduled to start at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
- The Crusaders are still in a position to earn the No. 6 seed and earn direct entry to the double-elimination bracket. They are at least guaranteed a spot in the play-in round.
