BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey closed out the 2023 regular season Saturday with Barton sweeping a doubleheader 6-1 and 11-7 in Confererce Carolinas softball action Saturday afternoon at Crusader Field this afternoon.
The Crusaders ended the game with an 18-24 overall record, 12-12 in league play, while Barton, which concludes its regular-season tomorrow at Converse, is 23-20, 13-9 in league play.
THE OPENER
- Mackenzie Allison and Trinity Wall each delivered a pair singles.was the only player with multiple hits, gaining a pair of singles. Allison drove in a run, while Wall scored one.
- Hallie Mele, Bailey Presley, Adison Yoder, and Shelby Sosebee also had hits in the contest.
- Barton steadily built at 5-0 into the sixth inning when the Crusaders got on the scoreboard via an RBI single by Wall.
- Yoder took the loss for the Abbey to fall 14-8. She struck out four.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Presley, Sprinkle and Wall had two hits in an 11-hit attack.
- The Crusaders opened a 3-0 lead in the first, Yoder's two-out double drove in a pair after an error started the scoring.
- Trailing 5-3 in the third, Wall evened the game with an RBI single to left, though she was thrown out a second trying for a double.
- The Crusaders gained their first lead of the day in the sixth, when a wild pitch plated Mele, then Sprinkle singled Pon for a 7-5 advantage.
- However. the Bulldogs countered with sixth in the seventh to take the sweep.
- Alannah Browne took the loss to fall to 3-12 on the season.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders enter the Conference Carolinas Tournament as the No. 8 seed.
- The Abbey will face UNC Pembroke at 11 a.m. in a play-in game.
- The winner meets regular-season champion King in the opening round of the tournament at 4 p.m..
