BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team came away with its second straight Conference Carolinas series win at home after finishing with a doubleheader split against Francis Marion Saturday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders took the first game, 10-5, before falling 11-9 in the second contest. The Abbey finished with five home runs on the day including two in the opener from
Connor Tucker and
Garrett Browder hitting one in each game.
Aengus Adams also homered in his first career start in the second game for The Abbey.
Belmont Abbey closes the day with a 21-10 overall record, 8-10 in the conference. Francis Marion is 14-19 with an identical 8-10 record.
GAME 1
- After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Crusaders got one back in the bottom of the inning to open the scoring.
- Ben Ferguson tied the game in the third with an RBI single before Tucker hit a two-run home run to give The Abbey a 4-2 lead.
- Browder's homer in the fifth made it 5-2 in favor of the Crusaders.
- Francis Marion scored four runs in the sixth to make it 6-5 before The Abbey charged back with a five-run sixth inning.
- All five runs came with two outs
- Ferguson tied the game with an RBI single before Tucker's three-run home run gave the Crusaders the lead for good.
- Carter DuHaime added an insurance run with his RBI double.
- Myles Hedgecock pitched 1.2 innings in relief of Alex Sniffen to earn his second straight win.
GAME 2
- Belmont Abbey took a 3-2 lead after the first innings thanks to an RBI single by Joe Whitaker followed by a two-run home run by Browder.
- The Patriots homered twice in the second before the Crusaders responded with three runs to trail 6-5 after two innings.
- Belmont Abbey trailed 11-5 entering the bottom of the eighth but attempted to rally with two runs scored in the eighth and ninth innings.
- Patrick Taylor reached base three times after being hit by a pitch.
- Aengus Adams led the Crusaders offense in Game 2 with three hits, including a two-run home run in the ninth.
UP NEXT
The Crusaders are on the road all of next week starting with a contest Catawba at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis.
Belmont Abbey resumes Conference Carolinas play with a road series at Chowan beginning next Friday in Murfreesboro, N.C.
