Crusaders Move to 3-0 in Conference With Victory over Lees-McRae

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team maintained its unbeaten start to Conference Carolinas play thanks to a 21-2 win over Lees-McRae Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.
 
The Crusaders got off to a fast start with an 11-1 lead after the first quarter and never looking back after that. Riley D'Andrea led the offensive attack for The Abbey with four goals and a career-best seven assists. Olivia Carlino also had four goals and two assists as she was part of nine different Crusaders who scored.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Summer Eddinger also earned her first career win in goal.
 
With the win, head coach Molly Lehman-Lewis became the winningest coach in program history earning win No. 59 in charge of the Crusaders. She surpassed Jenn Flaherty, who won 58 games in charge of the program from 2012-2017.
 
Belmont Abbey improved to 5-4, 3-0 in the conference. Lees-McRae is now 1-5 overall, 1-3 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • D'Andrea and Emma Pherson got The Abbey on the board with goals just 19 seconds apart in the first quarter.
  • Carlino scored three of her four goals in the opening 15 minutes.
  • Sophia Browning scored her first two goals of the season with both goals coming as the final goal of the first half and the game.  
  • Kacey Kubarewicz led the Crusaders with seven draw controls.
  • The Crusaders finished with 28 ground balls with Angela Bagatta leading the way with four.
  • The Abbey also finished with a season-best 14 caused turnovers led by Faith Piser with three.
  • Belmont Abbey matched a season-high with 39 shots in the game.
  • All six goals in the second half were assisted for The Abbey.
