Crusaders Pound out 21 Hits in Coker Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey pounded out 21 hits in a doubleheader at Coker on Tuesday, but came up just short in both games. The Crusaders dropped the opener 5-4 in eight innings and the nightcap 10-9.

With the results, The Abbey falls to 5-11 on the season. The Cobras improve to 17-11.

THE OPENER
  • Trinity Wall registered two hits, including an eighth-inning single that broke a 3-3 tie.
  • Sydney Pon, Bailey Presley and Mackenzie Sprinkle also had hits.
  • The Crusaders went up 3-0 with two runs in the first on an error and Sprinkle's RBI triple. Pon added to the lead in the third on a solo home run.
  • Coker tied the game with three runs in the fourth, then plated two in the eighth for the walk-off win.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Ivy Holley went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
  • Hallie Mele, Shelby Sosebee, Pon and Sprinkle each had two hits.
  • Mele drove in three runs on a bases-loaded triple in the seventh that cut the lead to 10-9.
  • Sosebee had two RBIs, as did Sprinkle.
  • The Crusaders finished with 16 hits, but left nine runners on base.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey begins Conference Carolinas play with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
  • The Crusaders are at Mount Olive to open the weekend, then travel to UNC-Pembroke to complete the eastern North Carolina swing.
