BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse used a stretch of five goals over a stretch of just under five minutes in the final quarter to pull away for a 17-13 victory over Young Harris Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders had strong offensive performances from
Riley D'Andrea and
Olivia Carlino, who accounted for 12 goals and four assists between them. Both had two assists each while D'Andrea and Carlino accounted for seven and five goals, respectively. D'Andrea was also credited with two caused turnovers.
Additionally, senior goalkeeper
Michelle Guppy finished with a career-best 17 saves in the win.
The win moves the Crusaders to 1-2 on the season while the Mountain Lions are now 3-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got off to a fast start by scoring the first four goals of the game with D'Andrea scoring the first three while Carlino had the other via a free-position shot.
- Kacey Kubarewicz scored her first goal of the season to begin the second quarter.
- D'Andrea added two more goals to extend later in the quarter to extend The Abbey lead to 7-2. The Crusaders took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
- Kate Roberts had the first of her four assists in the half.
- After the Mountain Lions cut the lead down to 7-4 to begin the second half, the Abbey pushed the lead back to six with goals from Emma Pherson, Carlino and Kubarewicz in the span of 61 seconds.
- Young Harris scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to pull even at 12-12.
- D'Andrea put The Abbey ahead with her seventh goal of the game with under seven minutes to go.
- Carlino scored the next two goals with assists from D'Andrea and Roberts.
- After Young Harris got back within two, goals from Haley Adamo and Pherson helped put the game away for the Crusaders.
- Shots were nearly even for the game with The Abbey holding a 37-36 advantage.
- The Abbey also held a 24-17 advantage in ground balls.
