BELMONT, N.C. -- Davis McCauley scored three goals and
Thomas Sullivan made 21 saves, including one in the final seconds to preserve the win, as Belmont Abbey defeated 18th-ranked Colorado Mesa 12-11 in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
A 4-1 advantage in the third quarter proved to be decisive, turning 7-6 halftime leading into 11-7. With the score 9-7, McCulley and Sweigert scored eight seconds part -- with 26 and 18 seconds remaining, respectively.
The Crusaders, who received votes in this week's USILA coaches poll, improve to 3-1 with the win while the Mavericks fall to 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Riley Arceneaux and Mikey Sweigert each tallied two goals and an assist for three points.
- Tre Childers scored two goals, while Caleb Mulcahy, Richie Timothee and Matthew Wyatt also found the net.
- The Mavericks outshot The Abbey 55-33 overall and 32-21 on goal.
- Faceoffs were nearly even with Belmont Abbey winning 13 of 25.
- Sullivan improved to 3-1 with the win.
