Stelley Scores Career High on Senior Day as Abbey Defeats Erskine

BELMONT, N.C. – Senior guard Taylor Stelley closed out the final home game of her Belmont Abbey women's basketball career with another strong scoring performance in a 72-25 victory over Erskine in Conference Carolinas play Wednesday night at the Wheeler Center.
 
Stelley was honored in a pregame ceremony and finished with a career-high 31 points in which she went 10 of 17 from 3-point range. Additionally, she made her 48th career start and appeared in her 131st game for The Abbey.
 
As a team, Belmont Abbey made a season-best 16 3-pointers en route to the win. The Crusaders earned their 20th win of the season. It is the fourth time in the last six seasons that The Abbey has matched or surpassed the 20-win mark. The Cruasders are 20-4 overall, 17-1 in Conference Carolinas. Erskine is now 8-16 overall, 4-14 in the league.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey's first three made field goals came via a 3-pointer from Cate Schieber and two from Stelley. The Crusaders led 19-5 after the first quarter.
  • Abigail Crain finished in double figures scoring for the 21st time this season, finishing with 10 points to go with eight rebounds and and a game-high six assists.
  • The Crusaders scored the first seven points of the second quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey finished the first half shooting an impressive 58.3 percent from the field.
  • The Crusaders out-rebounded the Flying Fleet 38-18. Crain and Peyton Nation led the team with eight rebounds with seven from Riley James.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with a season-best 21 assists in the contest. Stelley, Schieber and James had four assists each.
  • The 47-point win is the largest margin of victory the Crusaders have had this year. It is also the largest lead held all season.
  • The Crusaders held the Flying Fleet without a field goal in the fourth quarter.
 
REGIONAL RANKINGS
  • The NCAA came out with its teams under consideration for its regional rankings earlier this week ahead of the NCAA Division II tournament set to take place in March.
  • The teams are listed in alphabetical order with Belmont Abbey being listed first.
  • The initial set of rankings are set to be released next week.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders close the regular season with a pair of road games starting with a contest against Lees-McRae at 2 p.m. Saturday in Banner Elk. That's followed by a contest at UNC Pembroke at 5 p.m. next Wednesday.
  • A win Saturday will clinch a share of the regular season conference title.
