Crusaders Host UVA Wise in Home Opener

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team competed in its home opener against UVA Wise Saturday at Alumni Field.
 
Olivia Carlino led the Crusaders with six goals but it was the Cavaliers who came away with a 15-13 victory. UVA Wise rallied with five goals in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.
 
The Crusaders fell to 0-2 on the season while the Cavaliers improved to 2-0.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carlino provided the offensive spark early for the Crusaders scoring two goals within the first 1:16 of the contest.
  • UVA Wise answered with a pair of goals but Carlino and Haley Adamo scored the third and fourth goals of the afternoon, respectively.
  • Kate Roberts scored her first goal of the season in the second quarter. She also finished with an assist.
  • Emma Pherson had three goals in the contest with the first coming with 47 seconds left in the half to give the team a 7-6 lead going into halftime.
  • Pherson scored the other two goals in the third quarter.
  • Riley D'Andrea scored her first goal of the season to give The Abbey a 10-11 lead.
  • Adamo added a second goal in the second quarter to give the Crusaders a 5-3 advantage.
  • Shots were nearly even with UVA Wise holding a narrow 27-26 advantage. Carlino led the team with nine shots.
  • Hailey Carroll had two assists for the Crusaders.
  • Belmont Abbey had 11 caused turnovers with three from Lexi Helms to lead the way.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders are off for two weeks before returning to the field against Young Harris at 3 p.m. Saturday at Alumni Field.
