Abbey Baseball Opens 2023 Season With Win at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team opened its 2023 season on a strong note by defeating No. 16 Lenoir-Rhyne 7-2 Wednesday at Durham Field.
 
It was the first meeting between the two programs since March 4, 2020. Additionally, it was the first time since March 19, 2019 that the Crusaders had defeated the Bears. The two teams did not play each other last season.
 
Ben Ferguson led the way for the Abbey with three hits, including a home run in the top of the first inning to put the Crusaders ahead.
 
Carter DuHaime and Garrett Browder also recorded two hits for the Crusaders in the win. Alex Sniffen earned the victory after five shutout innings and allowing just three hits and striking out nine.
 
The Crusaders open the season at 1-0 while the Bears are 0-1.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ferguson's solo home run to left field in the first inning came with two outs.
  • Sniffen and Lenoir-Rhyne starting pitcher Joshua Lanham allowed just six hits combined in the first five innings.
  • Sniffen closed out his first appearance of the 2023 season by striking out the side in the fifth inning.
  • The Crusaders capitalized on pitching changes in the seventh inning starting with Joey Humphrey's first hit in an Abbey uniform.
  • After leading off with a single, he advanced to third base on a failed pickoff on an RBI single by Garrett Browder.
  • Carter DuHaime capped the inning with an RBI single to score Browder to make it 3-0 in favor of the Crusaders.
  • Ethan Wilson worked out of a jam in the seventh and struck out the final two batters he faced with the tying run at bat to keep it 3-1 Belmont Abbey.
  • Belmont Abbey broke the game open with a four-run ninth inning highlighted by a two-run double by DuHaime.
  • Connor Powell added an RBI single and Jack Boyles earned an RBI after walking with the bases loaded.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders begin a three-game series against Coker starting Friday at 4 p.m. in Hartsville, South Carolina.
  • The series concludes with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday at Abbey Yard for the first home date of the season.
