BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team made the most of its first game at home in nearly a month as the Crusaders defeated Barton 83-50 Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center. The contest marked the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams and the 83 points was a season high for The Abbey.
The Crusaders had four players finish in double figures scoring led by a game-high 16 points from
Abigail Crain to go with six rebounds and three assists.
Catherine Hendershott had 15 for The Abbey while
Cate Schieber and
Janiah Shular added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Additionally,
Reagan Iovino had nine points off the bench while
Peyton Nation nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for The Abbey, who improved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. Barton is now 0-7 overall and 0-1 in the league after the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey did not trail for the entire contest. It's the second time that's happened this year after doing so in the win at USC Aiken back on November 21.
- The Crusaders tallied the first five points of the game with Cate Schieber's three-pointer marking the first field goal made.
- Belmont Abbey had a 14-4 run during a six-minute stretch of the opening quarter.
- The 45 points at halftime were a season high for the Crusaders.
- Crain scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half.
- The largest lead for the Crusaders was 34 which took place late in the third quarter.
- The Abbey went 22 of 24 from the free throw line which are season highs in both categories.
- Belmont Abbey out-rebounded Barton 38-22 in the contest. Nation had 10 rebounds followed by Shular with seven.

- The Crusaders head back on the road to face Anderson at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
