BELMONT, N.C. – The fourth-seeded Belmont Abbey men's soccer team tied its opening round match with 22.8 seconds left in regulation but ninth-seeded Emmanuel scored with less than two minutes left in overtime for a 2-1 victory over the Crusaders.
With the heartbreaking result, the Crusaders see their season come to an end with a 10-5-3 overall record. Emmanuel is now 8-5-3 and advances to face fifth-seeded Converse in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trent McConnaughey made his third start of the season in goal for Belmont Abbey. He made three saves on the evening.
- Dorian Samo took the first shot on goal just over 13 minutes in for the Crusaders.
- Belmont Abbey held defensively late in the first half when Emmanuel missed a penalty kick and had a shot go off the crossbar in a five-minute span.
- Rafael Calderon got the Lions on the board in the 74th minute.
- Duncan's goal came off a misplayed clearance to extend the match. He led the team with four shots on goal. Samo had four shots as well, two on target.
- The Lions went ahead when Ross Lamont headed the ball in off a Tomas Pollacchi corner kick.
- Emmanuel outshot Belmont Abbey 14-13 but the Crusaders had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
