Crusaders Pull Away From Carson-Newman for Sixth Straight Win

BELMONT, N.C.— The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team opened 2023 on a strong note thanks to a 74-64 victory over Carson-Newman Tuesday afternoon at the Wheeler Center.
 
The victory marked the sixth straight win for the Crusaders and the second straight win over a regionally-ranked opponent. Belmont Abbey was ranked No. 5 in the latest D2SIDA poll while Carson-Newman was No. 9.
 
The Crusaders closed the game out with an impressive showing from the free throw line, making all 23 from the charity stripe and 10 in the fourth quarter.
 
Catherine Hendershott matched her season high with 18 points and added five rebounds. Abigail Crain added 17 points, six assists, 2 assists and a steal.
 
Taylor Stelley and Riley James also finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Belmont Abbey moved to 8-3 overall while Carson-Newman is now 8-6.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After facing an early deficit, Belmont Abbey pulled ahead with a 9-1 run to close the first quarter to take a 19-17 lead.
  • Carson-Newman went back-and-forth with the Crusaders and led 34-31 at halftime.
  • Peyton Nation saw her first action of the season in the second half and made an immediate impact, finishing with two points, three rebounds and two steals.
  • The Crusaders got some separation with a 9-0 run in the third quarter and took a 47-38 lead. Belmont Abbey would not trail for the rest of the game.
  • The Crusaders took advantage of 20 Eagles turnovers and turned that into 30 points.
  • The 25 points in the fourth quarter were a season-best for The Abbey.
  • The 46.9 percent shooting from the field is the second best percentage for the Crusaders this season.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
  • During Tuesday's contest, the Conference Carolinas office announced Abigail Crain as the Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against Wingate last Friday.
  • It is the first time this season a Crusader player has earned a weekly award from the conference office.
