GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey field hockey team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon with to a 2-0 win over Mercyhurst in a neutral-site game at Limestone. After playing a scoreless first 45 minutes,
Casey Etter and
Alexandra Yancey each scored in the fourth quarter to give the Crusaders the decisive margin. The win was the first under head coach
Chelsea Herlocker for the Crusaders and are now 1-1 on the season.
Saturday's contest marked the first game of the season for Mercyhurst, who drops to 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders held the advantage offensively throughout the game, recording 11 shots for the game and seven on goal.
- Belmont Abbey also held the Lakers to just two shots for the contest, both of which came in the final quarter.
- Etter scored her first goal of the season and the 11th of her career, moving her into fifth place all-time in program history.
- Yancey scored her first collegiate goal with just over nine minutes remaining in the game to extend the lead for The Abbey.
- Etter and Isabella Grasso led the way with three shots and two shots on goal each for the Crusaders.
- Three Crusaders, Makayla Alessi, Taylor Reeping and Peyton Lilley, all made their collegiate debuts in Saturday's game.
- Chloe Parker recorded her first win of the season and finished with two saves.
