WILSON, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team took on No. 1 seed North Greenville during the second day of the Conference Carolinas baseball tournament Friday at Fleming Stadium. The game featured three separate weather delays and it turned into one of the longest games in program history.
In the end, it was North Greenville who came away with the 12-9 victory over Belmont Abbey. The game had featured three separate weather delays that lasted a total of three hours and 13 minutes.
Including the delay, the game took seven hours and 22 minutes to complete from when the first pitch was thrown.
Belmont Abbey is now 34-17 on the season while North Greenville is now 43-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game started at 3:15 p.m. with Belmont Abbey sending three batters to the plate prior to the first lightning delay.
- After an hour and 28-minute delay, The Abbey came out strong with five runs in the top of the first inning.
- Ben Gobbel drove in the game's first run with an RBI single that was followed by a two-run home run by Kale Rhame.
- Patrick Taylor drove in two more runs with a two-run single to make it 5-0 for Belmont Abbey.
- NGU scored two runs in the second innings before the game was delayed for a second time, this one lasting 45 minutes. North Greenville made it 5-4 following the third inning.
- Neither team scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning before Belmont Abbey extended the lead to 6-4 thanks to a sacrifice fly by Adam Overcash.
- North Greenville took the lead with a sacrifice fly that was followed by another scoring run on an error on appeal.
- Belmont Abbey regained the lead in the seventh with a three-run frame.
- Taylor drove in the tying run with an RBI single and that was followed by a pinch-hit single by Carter DuHaime to make it 8-7. Sean Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to make it 9-7.
- North Greenville re-took the lead with a three-run home run to make it 10-9.
- The game was delayed for an hour for a third time due to rain and lightning. North Greenville scored two more runs when play resumed.
- Taylor recorded his career-best fourth hit of the night with a single in the ninth inning.
- Zach Aehlert also had a pair of hits to finish as one of three Crusaders with multiple hits for the game.
- Belmont Abbey used six pitchers in the game as did North Greenville.

- Belmont Abbey will await to see if they earn a spot in the Southeast Regional of the NCAA Tournament on May 15.
- North Greenville will face the winner of Barton-Mount Olive at a time and date to be determined. The Barton-Mount Olive game was delayed to 11 a.m. Saturday.
