Smith Tallies Five Goals as Crusaders Top Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 23-1 Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse victory over Southern Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders scored less the a minute into the contest and steamrolled to a 13-1 lead at halftime.

Jenn Smith scored five goals with Emma Pherson and Riley D'Andrea each adding three. The Abbey improved to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in league play.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emma Pherson scored the first goal of the day, just 53 seconds into the contest.
  • Five different players tallied first-quarter goals as the Crusaders built an 8-0 advantage. Smith tallied three in the period with D'Andrea adding two. Christina Fabrizio  and Mackenzie Kaderabek joined Pherson with one each.
  • In the second quarter, D'Andrea scored within the first two minutes before Sophia Colantuno pushed the lead to double digits. The quarter ended with two late goals from Olivia Carlino and Ansley Burroughs. 
  • The Crusader defense caused 24 turnovers on the day, and allowed just three shots on goals by the Warriors.

  • Belmont Abbey hosts North Greenville in crucial Conference Carolinas matchup.
  • The contest will take place on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field, a day earlier than originally scheduled.
