Box Score DUNCAN, S.C. – The No. 4 seed Belmont Abbey softball team opened the 2022 Conference Carolinas Tournament against the No. 5 seed Francis Marion Patriots Thursday at Tyger River Park.
It was the third game in the last five days after facing each other in a doubleheader Saturday. Those teams split that matchup but it was the Patriots who ultimately came away with a 4-1 victory over the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey is now 30-14 on the season while Francis Marion is now 30-18.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Francis Marion got on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.
- The Crusaders answered in the second inning by loading the bases with two walks and a single from Maddie Phillips.
- Emma Frye drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center field to pull even at 1-1.
- Abby Craver was able to get out of a jam in the third inning by not allowing a run after runners reached second and third with one out.
- The Patriots pulled ahead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
- Alannah Brown pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Crusaders and struck out two in relief.
- Sydney Pon had two hits to lead The Abbey.
POSTSEASON HONORS
- Prior to Thursday's game, Belmont Abbey pitcher Abby Craver and third baseman Emily Morgan were both presented their awards as part of the All-Conference teams.
- Craver was named Freshman of the Year and was also a first-team selection and a part of the inaugural All-Defensive Team. Morgan was a second-team selection.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will move to the elimination bracket and face the loser of UNC Pembroke-Mount Olive at 2 p.m. Friday.
