Abbey Ends Regular Season With Split of Francis Marion

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey softball team wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader split against Francis Marion Saturday at Crusader Field.
 
The Crusaders rallied to win Game 1 3-2 before falling 11-1 in six innings in Game 2 against the Patriots.
 
Belmont Abbey finishes the regular season at 30-13 overall and 15-9 in Conference Carolinas play. The 30 wins is the most for the regular season in program history. The team will have a chance to tie or pass the school record for most wins in a single season at the Conference Carolinas Tournament next week.
 
Francis Marion moves to 28-17 overall and 14-8 in the conference with two games remaining in the regular season.
 
GAME 1
  • Both teams scored in the first inning to begin the day.
  • Francis Marion scored twice in the opening frame while Belmont Abbey responded with an RBI single by Payton Whitley to get on the board.
  • Maddie Phillips led the team with two hits in the first game.
  • Pitcher Abby Craver allowed just two hits in between the second and sixth innings.
  • The Crusaders' rally started with two outs in the sixth beginning with singles from Emma Frye and Phillips.
  • Mackenzie Sprinkle hit a double to left-center field to bring in both runners and give The Abbey a 3-2 lead.
  • The Crusaders held the Patriots off in the final inning to earn the win.
  • Craver earned her 14th win of the season.
 
GAME 2
  • Hallie Mele led the Crusaders with three hits in Game 2.
  • The Patriots broke the game open with eight runs in the third inning.
  • Craver had two hits for the Abbey, including her second-career triple in the bottom of the fourth inning. She later scored on an RBI single from Frye.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with seven hits during the second game.
 
UP NEXT
The Crusaders will prepare to play at the Conference Carolinas Tournament that is scheduled to begin Thursady at Tyger River Park in Duncan, South Carolina.
Belmont Abbey will be either the No. 4 or 5 seed pending the outcome of the Francis Marion-Erskine doubleheader Monday. Regardless of seed, the team will open the tournament at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
