Cooper’s Walk-Off Hit Helps Abbey Earn Split Against Braves

BELMONT, N.C.— Cameron Cooper hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game of a doubleheader to help the Belmont Abbey softball team earn a split with UNC Pembroke Friday at Crusader Field. Belmont Abbey lost the first game 4-1 before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory over the Braves.

The Crusaders moved to 29-12 overall and 14-8 in the Conference Carolinas standings. UNC Pembroke is now 23-15 overall and 12-10 in the league.

GAME 1
  • Belmont Abbey starting pitcher Abby Craver and UNC Pembroke starter Kinsley Sheppard were locked in a pitcher's duel early on with no runs through the first four innings.
  • Maddie Phillips recorded the first hit of the game for the Crusaders in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Payton Whitley drew four walks in the first contest for the Crusaders.
  • The lone run of Game 1 for the Abbey came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hallie Mele scored on a fielder's choice with Cameron Cooper at bat. Mele led the inning off with a single.
  • Craver finished with four strikeouts over 6.2 innings.

GAME 2               
  • After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, the Crusaders pulled within a run in the bottom of the inning with the first RBI single of the game from Cooper.
  • The Abbey pulled even in the second inning with an RBI double from Mackenzie Sprinkle. She was one of three Crusaders to finish with a pair of hits on the day.
  • The back-and-forth battle continued in the fourth inning with both teams scoring runs in the frame. Belmont Abbey's run came via a sacrifice fly from Emma Frye.
  • Abigail Mralvja put together a solid day in the circle, pitching 5.1 innings of relief and allowing just one run during that time.
  • Abby Craver was able to get the final out of the sixth inning while the Braves had two runners on base. She pitched a scoreless seventh and earned her 13th win of the season.
  • Payton Whitley finished with two hits in the second game for the Crusaders. 
  • Sprinkle scored the winning run after leading off with a single and moving over to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Hallie Mele.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders conclude the regular season with a doubleheader against Francis Marion beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday back at Crusader Field.
