MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey closed out its 2022 regular-season road schedule Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at Chowan, shutting out the Hawks in both games. The Crusaders won the opener 6-0 and the nightcap 3-0 for their eight win in the last 10 games.
The Abbey is now 26-11 overall and 13-7 in league play, while Chowan falls to 8-29, 3-15.
The 26 wins rank second in school history behind a 31-26 finish in 2004.
THE OPENER
- Four different Crusaders had two hits each -- Hallie Mele, Cameron Cooper, Sydney Pon and Emily Morgan. The Abbey had 11 hits total.
- The Abbey jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second with RBI singles by Pon, Sprinkle and Mele.
- Cooper doubled in a run and Pon singled in another as part of a two-run fifth.
- Abby Craver through a complete-game four-hitter to improve to 12-6. She walked one and struck out seven.
THE NIGHTCAP
- The Crusaders' seven hits came from seven different starters.
- Bailey Presley and Pon drove in runs with hits, while Emma Frye had an RBI groundout in the second for the first run.
- Presley singled in Mele in the third, then Pon's double brought home Isabella Kretschmer in the fifth to cap the scoring.
- Alannah Brown, reigning Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week, continued her dominance with a five-hit, complete-game effort. She walked two and struck out five.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey returns to action on Tuesday after an extended Easter break.
- The Crusaders host Allen in the final non-conference action on Tuesday.
