Crusaders Upset Emmanuel Behind Five in Double Figures

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey placed five players in double figures and shot 66.7% in the second half to upset second-seeded Emmanuel 93-70 Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Tournament.

With the win, the Crusaders (21- 9) advanced to their fifth straight conference title game, tomorrow afternoon against 8th-ranked and top-seeded UNC Pembroke. The Braves rallied to survive an upset bid by Southern Wesleyan 67-66.

Chandler Baker led the Crusaders with 20 points on eight-of-10 shooting from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sean Halloran added 19 points and was one of four players with four assists. He hit five of eight from the field and made seven of nine free throws.
  • LJ McCoy added 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, while Mario Lacy and Quest Aldridge -- the other two two starters -- added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Charles Solomon grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
  • Belmont Abbey shot 59.3 percent (32 of 54) overall from the field, including 16 of 24 in the second half. Meanwhile, the defense limited the Lions to 36.4 percent overall, including 31.0 (9 of 29) after intermission.
  • The Abbey never trailed in the contest and was tied just once -- at 2-2, 83 seconds in.
  • A 10-2 run over a four-minute stretch late in the first half turned a 30-28 lead into 40-30. Emmanuel hit a three late in the period to trail by seven at the break.
  • The Crusaders led 53-49 at the 13:17 mark of the second half then they started a 20-8 run that put the game out of reach. The biggest lead was 26 with 2:26 to play.
  • The contest marked the fourth straight year that the teams met in the conference tournament with the Crusaders winning the last two.
  • The win also avenged a regular-season sweep by Emmanuel -- 84-79 in double overtime in Belmont and 95-89 in Franklin Springs.
