WILSON, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's tennis team moved to 2-0 in Conference Carolinas play with a 6-1 victory over No. 19 Barton Friday.
The Crusaders earned the victory thanks to a sweep in doubles play and all three matches were decided by identical 6-3 margins. Belmont Abbey also won five out of the six singles matches.
Xaveam Van Wijk teamed up with
Nicholas Cary to defeat the Barton team of Kristoffer Staahlbrand/Oscar Marmestedt. Van Wijk followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win in No. 1 singles over Staahlbrand.
Kent Shiell and
Andres Golindano rallied to win their respective singles matches after dropping the first set to earn a point each for the Crusaders. Golindano teamed up with
Alex Turner to also earn a doubles victory on the day.
Zachary Blythe and
Nelson Stafford also earned a pair of wins Friday for The Abbey.

The Crusaders head further into eastern North Carolina to face Chowan in a match at 11 a.m. Saturday in Murfreesboro.
