MARS HILL, N.C.— The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team officially opened the regular season with a road game at Mars Hill Wednesday.
The Crusaders were locked in a close battle for most of the game but it was the Lions who came away with a 69-59 victory.
Cate Scheiber finished with a team-high 16 points to lead the Crusaders, including four made three-pointers.
Abigail Crain and
Taylor Stelley also finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Belmont Abbey is 0-1 on the season while Mars Hill moves to 1-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Scheiber made three of her four three-pointers in the first quarter and provided a spark off the bench to help Belmont Abbey stand tied at 19-19 after the first 10 minutes.
- Neither side had a lead larger than six points in the first half as Belmont Abbey held a 35-33 lead at halftime.
- Catherine Hendershott showed her versatility in the opener, finishing with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.
- The seven rebounds were a team high while she finished tied for the team lead in assists with Stelley.
- Belmont Abbey shot 42.9 percent from the field. Mars Hill shot 41.1 percent.
- Rebounds proved to be pivotal as the Lions outrebounded the Crusaders, 38-28, for the game. Additionally, Mars Hill had 12 offensive rebounds compared to six for Belmont Abbey.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders open the home schedule with a matchup against UVA Wise at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeler Center.
- Saturday's contest is the first game of a four-game home stand for the Crusaders.
