Crusaders End Historic Season in Opening Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Belmont Abbey saw its historic men's volleyball season come to a close Monday afternoon as the
Crusaders dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-19) decision to Penn State in the opening round of the NCAA Men's National
Collegiate Volleyball Championship.

The Abbey, making its first NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the Conference Carolinas Tournament, finished the
year at 15-8.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
  • Andrew Kohut led the attack with 10 kills, while Matteo Miselli hit .316 with nine kills.
  • Brennan Davis, a senior, dished out 28 assists.
  • Kohut and Daniel Cerqua each tallied six digs.
  • Brian Long, another senior, added six kills, two aces and a block assist.
  • Penn State hit .509 (33k-4e-57a) in the contest, the highest by a Belmont Abbey opponent all season. The Crusaders countered at .185 (30k-18e-65a).
  • The first set featured five ties.
THE FIRST SET
  • After giving up on the first two points on serves -- an error and PSU ace -- and trailing 4-1, the Crusaders settled into the match.
  • The Abbey tied the score at 9-9, then reached the media timeout trailing 15-13. At that point, The Abbey was hitting .417.
  • Trailing 16-13, three straight Crusader kills evened the set again at 16-16. After each team scored, Penn State registered back-to-back points for a 19-17 lead. A Miselli kill and service ace by Long re-tied the score, then split points left the set even at 20-20.
  • However, the Nittany Lions tallied two straight -- and allowed Belmont Abbey to answer only once -- to keep the lead for good.
  • The first set ended 25-22, despite the Crusaders outhitting Penn State .375 to .364.

THE SECOND SET
  • Belmont Abbey again fell behind, trailing 6-2 early. The Nittany Lions continued to build on the margin, using a 7-2 spurt to stretch a 10-7 lead to 17-9.
  • Penn State ended the set 25-13 with the Crusaders hitting -.043 (8-9-23) during the period.
THE THIRD SET
  • For the third straight time, the Nittany Lions took the first two points, stretching the lead to 5-1. Belmont Abbey closed to 9-5 but four straight points sent PSU to an eight-point advantage (13-5).
  • The score was 16-10 when William Morris served an ace before Brandon Pryzwara and Brian Long combined on a block to cut the gap to four.
  • Belmont Abbey never quit, saving four match points before a service error ended the comeback.
