BELMONT, N.C. -
Morgan Smith hit a pair of homeruns as the Belmont Abbey softball team split with Barton this afternoon, with the Bulldogs taking the opener 5-3 and the Crusaders earning an 8-0 shutout in Game 2. BAC now stands at 5-11 on the year, with 3-3 Conference Carolinas record. Barton is now 9-11 on the year, with a 2-4 conference mark.
GAME 1
- Annabeth Watkins did not give up a hit over the first two innings. Barton scored two runs in the third
- Smith helped The Abbey capitalize on a Barton error in the bottom of the inning to make it a 2-1 game
- In the fifth, Smith hit a homerun with Melissa Neyhouse on base to put the Crusaders in front 3-2
- Barton tied the game at three in the top of the sixth, and then took the lead in eighth, for the 5-3 win
- Watkins tossed eight strikeouts and a complete game
GAME 2
- Game 2 was all Abbey. Kellee Branham doubled home Payton Whitley in the second, which proved to be the game winner, as the Crusaders did not give up a Barton run in the game
- Smith made it a 2-0 game in the third with her second homer of the day
- Three straight singles in the fifth scored Smith for a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Kalyn Womack singled to bring home Sydney Pon, and the Crusaders wrapped up the 8-0 win
- Alannah Browne only gave up one hit in the contest
- On the day Smith was the Crusader leader, going 4-for-6 with four runs, 3 RBIs, and two homers
- Neyhouse went a combined 4-for-8 with a run and an RBI

Belmont Abbey will host Chowan tomorrow in a doubleheader that will begin at 1 p.m.
